Towards the end of last month, Solana Mobile, a subsidiary of Solana Labs, announced the launch of the Saga mobile phone. The co-founder of Solana Labs, Anatoly Yakovenko, has expressed his enthusiasm for this project, adding that the phone would witness massive user adoption.

Solana’s smartphone launch

Saga is an Android mobile phone focused on Web3. The flagship mobile phone provides unique functionality and will be supported by the Solana blockchain. This mobile phone will make it convenient for people to make easy and secure transactions in Web3 while also managing digital assets.

Yakovenko commented on this project, saying that it was tapping into a massive market. According to Yakovenko, around 7 billion people globally use mobile phones, while over 100 million people hold crypto assets. These statistics are expected to increase in the coming years, and with Saga’s focus on Web3, the project was bound to receive notable success.

The other co-founder of Solana, Raj Gokal, said that they selected the name Saga because crypto was still an upcoming sector. Gokal noted that integrating cryptocurrencies into mobile promoted increased adoption and better opportunities for people.

In an interview with the Bankless Podcast, Yakovenko said that the objective of the new product was to boost experiences for Web3 products, including non-fungible tokens (NFTs). He said that the Saga mobile phone would allow people in the cryptocurrency sector to have a convenient way of interacting with different offerings.

Solana’s Saga launch triggers mixed reactions

The Solana community has supported the launch of this new phone. Some even compared Saga to Apple. Yakovenko said that crypto on Saga would be like Apple Pay, where users do not have to remember all their card details to make a transaction.

Some community members even took this launch to compare the Solana and Ethereum blockchains. One Twitter user said that while Solana was a new network, it was already making major moves, such as launching this phone. On the other hand, Ethereum had remained without innovation for years.

However, not all of the crypto community praised Solana over this move. Some used the launch to castigate the network for its frequent outages. In early June, Solana suffered from its fifth outage within the year. Therefore, some argued that Solana developers should use their time and resources to make the network more reliable instead of building a mobile phone.
