Data from Ethernodes shows that 73.5% of ethereum nodes are already “Merge ready” These nodes are now prepared for the Merge that is slated to happen on September 13-15, which will see Ethereum switch to a proof-of-stake blockchain.

73.5% of Ethereum nodes are “Merge ready”

The latest data from Ethernodes comes ahead of the Bellatrix upgrade. Bellatrix is a necessary upgrade that will be among the last processes the Ethereum developers undertake before the official Merge.

For Ethereum to become ready for the Merge, Ethereum node operators must comply with the Bellatrix upgrade. It can be done by updating the consensus layer clients before the epoch 144896 on the Beacon Chain scheduled at 11:34:47am UTC on September 6, 2022.

Currently, 26.7% of Ethereum nodes are not ready for the Merge. The co-founder of the Ethereum blockchain, Vitalik Buterin, and Ethereum’s core developer, Tim Beiko, have been urging other node operators to update their clients in a series of tweets.

The Ethereum Foundation has also warned the node operators that fail to make the update, saying that it would lead to Ethereum clients syncing to the pre-fork blockchain. The Ethereum Foundation has also warned that the node operators will be stuck with an incompatible network and will not send Ether or operate after the Merge.

The data by Ethernodes also shows that most of the “Not-Ready” nodes are within the geth client. This client is yet to upgrade its nodes to Geth v1.10.23 or a higher one. The other Ethereum clients that have also not made the upgrade include Besu, Erigon, and Nethermind.

Ethereum nodes are mandated to validate blocks, and they can be run using different Et5hereum client software that differs in the programming language and the code base.

Ethereum Merge nears

After the Bellatrix upgrade is finalized, the last process for the Merge will happen in the “Paris event.” This event will be triggered after the Terminal Total Difficulty (TTD) hits 58750000000000000000000, which is estimated to happen around September 15.

After the execution layer surpasses this TTD, the following block will be created by a Beacon Chain validator. After the block is complete, it will mark the final transition of the Ethereum blockchain into a proof-of-stake network.

The Ethereum Foundation has also provided guidelines for Ether holders and the holders of other Ethereum-based assets. These users will not be required to do anything with their assets during the Merge. However, they should be vigilant and watch out for scams urging them to do anything that could lead to losses.
