In a bold move to fortify the nation’s digital defenses, the Biden Administration has unveiled a groundbreaking two-year competition titled the “AI Cyber Challenge” (AIxCC). According to the official press release from The White House, this initiative leverages the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to protect the integrity of America’s most crucial software, including the code that underpins the internet and essential infrastructure.
Spearheaded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), this endeavor has garnered the collaboration of prominent AI industry players, including Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI, collectively contributing their expertise and cutting-edge technology to bolster the nation’s cybersecurity efforts.

The AI Cyber Challenge aims to address the escalating concern surrounding software vulnerabilities by harnessing the capabilities of AI. This competition, featuring an impressive prize pool of nearly $20 million, aims to inspire innovation in the field of cybersecurity. By merging AI technology with cybersecurity expertise, the challenge seeks to develop new strategies and technologies that can swiftly enhance the security of computer code – a critical aspect of safeguarding digital landscapes in an increasingly interconnected world.
Perri Adams, program manager at DARPA’s Information Innovation Office, expressed optimism about AI’s potential to bolster defense mechanisms. On a call on Tuesday, Adam told reporters:
We have to keep defense one step ahead. And AI offers a very promising approach for that.
This sentiment echoes through the collaborative efforts of AI giants like Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI. These companies recently participated in a White House summit, emphasizing the intersection of AI and cybersecurity and showcasing their commitment to mitigating the risks posed by AI’s capabilities.
Participants must craft security solutions that showcase innovation to clinch the coveted top spot in DARPA’s competition. The prime objective for participants is to develop a system that can swiftly identify and repel attacks on critical infrastructure code. Perri Adams stated:
To win first place, and a top prize of $4 million, finalists must build a system that can rapidly defend critical infrastructure code from attack.
This requirement underscores the government’s pursuit of autonomous software capable of preemptively detecting and neutralizing risks.
Key Milestones and Participation
The Biden-Harris Administration introduced the AI Cyber Challenge during the renowned Black Hat USA Conference in Las Vegas, an event renowned for pioneering cybersecurity innovations. With its emphasis on automating vulnerability identification and resolution, the competition aligns seamlessly with the conference’s tradition of advancing cybersecurity capabilities.
DARPA is set to host an inclusive competition by providing access to cutting-edge AI technology from industry leaders. This ensures that established entities and smaller businesses can participate on a level playing field. The event’s timeline includes a qualifying round in Spring 2024, with top scorers advancing to the semifinals at DEF CON 2024 – a prestigious cybersecurity conference. The final showdown is slated for DEF CON 2025, where the highest-ranking competitors will vie for additional monetary rewards.
Adams stated:
If successful, AIxCC will not only produce the next generation of cybersecurity tools, but will show how AI can be used to better society by defending its critical underpinnings.
This is not the first time the government has used a hacking competition to encourage new ideas. In 2014, DARPA started the Cyber Grand Challenge. It aimed to create a system that could automatically protect computers from cyberattacks, similar to the current two-year challenge.
In a bid to maximize the impact of the AI Cyber Challenge, the Open Source Security Foundation (OpenSSF) will serve as a challenge advisor. This foundation, an initiative of the Linux Foundation, will provide guidance and facilitate the practical application of winning software solutions, ensuring their swift integration into safeguarding critical software systems.

A Stepping Stone in AI Development
This announcement aligns with the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to harnessing AI’s potential to tackle pressing challenges. The administration has secured voluntary commitments from prominent AI companies to manage the technology’s risks and promote responsible development.
Furthermore, the administration’s dedication to transparency and safety is evident in its support of an independent evaluation of large language models (LLMs) at DEF CON 2023, a groundbreaking endeavor to advance secure and transparent AI development.
The AI Cyber Challenge underscores the administration’s dedication to cybersecurity and reflects its recognition of AI’s role in automating cybersecurity processes. The contest aspires to bridge the gap between security vulnerabilities and practical solutions, envisioning a future where AI-powered systems swiftly uncover and mitigate vulnerabilities, outpacing malicious actors seeking to exploit software weaknesses.
