One of the legendary NBA players, Stephen Curry, is the latest champion to venture into non-fungible tokens (NFTs). After breaking the all-time three-point NBA record, Curry will release wearable sneakers for the metaverse.
Curry will be releasing these wearables with Under Armour, a sportswear manufacturer. The partnership will create the first cross-platform metaverse globally, featuring in-game functionality.
Stephen Curry celebrates milestone with NFT release
Curry will be releasing this NFT as he celebrates one of his notable wins. Last week, the point guard for Golden State Warriors broke the all-time three-point NBA record after making his 2974 shot in his career.
To mark this achievement, Under Armour has announced its release of 2974 NFTs in a collection dubbed “Genesis Curry Flow.” These NFTs will be inspired by the shoes Curry won on the day he broke this record.
The NFT is interoperable, as users can wear them across three gaming metaverses, namely Decentraland, Gala Games and The Sandbox. These are the three leading metaverse projects in the market.
The sneakers have been valued at $333 each, another sign of its achievement. Under Armour notes that the gains derived from this sale will be donated to charities and ensure that the youth can access sports.
Curry will also use his proceeds, through Curry Brand, to build three new basketball courts in Charlotte, New York City and Oakland. The NFT release was supported by Berlin Cameron, a creative agency.
The founder of Berlin Cameron, Ewen Cameron, commented on this stating, “With the stature of Stephen’s achievement, we wanted to do something that truly “changed the metaverse game for good, and so the notion of the first sneaker that can travel across the platform and have genuine functionality and performance was born.”
NBA and NFTs
The NBA is one of the sporting leagues that have ventured deeply into NFTs and the entire crypto space. Besides Curry, other NBA stars who publicly endorsed NFTs include Paul George from the Los Angeles Clippers and Josh Hart with the New Orleans Pelicans.
The NBA NFT space has grown largely because of NBA Top Shot. This is a project developed by Dapper Lab that allows fans to sell special and rare basketball moments. NBA Top Shot has recorded major growth over the years, and it now ranks as one of the leading NFT platforms in terms of sales and trading volumes.
The entire sports sector has also ventured deeply into the crypto space. Soccer teams have also shown interest in selling fan moments. The Socios platform in the soccer sporting sector has allowed teams to sell fan tokens to boost engagements. Socios also allows teams to roll out NFTs. A few months back, AC Milan launched NFTs on Socios.
