In a shocking revelation, a Singaporean cybersecurity firm has uncovered a massive data breach involving the widely used artificial intelligence chatbot, ChatGPT.
Over the past year, over 100,000 login credentials for the popular AI chatbot have been leaked and traded on the dark web. This alarming development highlights the vulnerability of even the most advanced AI systems to malicious cyber activity.
Group-IB Revealed the Number of ChatGPT Compromised Logins
In a recent blog post, Group-IB unveiled on June 22 that between June 2022 and May 2023, over 100,000 devices containing breached login for the popular AI chatbot have been sold on the dark web.
Group-IB’s Threat Intelligence platform made a significant discovery about the compromised credentials of ChatGPT. The cybersecurity firm found these compromised login details embedded within the logs of info-stealing malware, which were being traded on illegal dark web marketplaces over the course of the past year.
The investigation revealed that the number of these logs containing compromised ChatGPT accounts reached a peak of 26,802 in May 2023. Group-IB’s research revealed that the Asia-Pacific region has been the most heavily impacted by the sale of ChatGPT credentials over the past year.
Group-IB added that “Consequently, unauthorized access to ChatGPT accounts may expose confidential or sensitive information, which can be exploited for targeted attacks against companies and their employees.”
Experts at Group-IB pointed out that an increasing number of employees are leveraging the capabilities of ChatGPT to enhance their work efficiency, whether in software development or business communications.
It is worth noting that ChatGPT retains the history of user interactions, including queries and AI-generated responses, by default. This means that once an account is compromised, the stored history may also be at risk of being exposed, potentially leading to further security concerns or privacy breaches.
