Italy is about to begin enjoying one of the most realistic applications of blockchain technology, as the country’s copyright authority recently announced that it would be using the technology to help with copyright management.

According to a December 7 report from industry news medium Cointelegraph, the Italian Society of Authors and Publishers (SIAE) has teamed up with Algorand, a blockchain company based out of Boston, to develop a dedicated ecosystem that will be used for copyright management. The platform, which will also be developed with input from the University of Rome and consulting company Blockchain Core, will help the copyright authority to handle copyright claims and approval across the country,

Improved Scalability and Strength

The Algorand platform makes use of a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) protocol, which ensures that users are able to achieve easy stability and scalability. For an ecosystem that will possibly be handling millions of copyright claims every year, this platform seems ready for the challenge. Both Algorand and the SIAE have expressed their confidence that blockchain will be the most dominant technology in the near future, and they are hoping that taking advantage and harnessing it now will help them to prepare for such a future.

With the new platform, the SIAE is hoping to transform and strengthen the process of managing copyright claims, with new tools and services that will improve accessibility and openness. Ultimately, the goal is to help enhance the efficiency of intermediation activities.

Professor Silvio Micali, the founder of Algorand, expressed enthusiasm for the future of the project, claiming that the Algorand 2.0 platform will be able to bring several of the SIAE’s initiatives to life.

“The collaboration between technology providers and companies projected into the future, such as SIAE, paves the way to great opportunities for progress towards economic models that promote inclusiveness, transparency, and frictionless transactions,” he added.

Blockchain for Copyright Management

It might not get as much press or coverage as some other properties, but one of the most disruptive applications of blockchain technology could be with copyright handling. These days, massive Internet penetration has made it easy for people to get their hands on the world of others, and Italian blogs like cripto-valuta have made it easier for the information to get across to people in the technology sphere. You can download a beat and tweak it to make it yours, and you can get a stock image and add the watermark for your company.

In truth, these properties are protected by copyright law. Per the U.S. Patent and Copyright Office, original works such as “literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works, such as poetry, novels, movies, songs, computer software, and architecture,” whether in their physical or online form, are protected by the law. However, proving that you created a piece of work is trickier than it seems.

Blockchain can help creators to protect their copyrights by developing an immutable database of information, which includes registration dates, contact information, and much more. With this, anyone who wants to use your work or alter it in any way and get in touch with you for remunerations. Patent users can also check who has been downloading their work, a feature which will help in conducting legal proceedings against thieves.
