Meta, formerly Facebook, continues to focus on its metaverse plans. Recent reports show that the company is poaching employees from other tech giants such as Apple and Microsoft to support its metaverse plans.
Meta is poaching employees with experience in virtual and augmented realities to ensure that rebranding to Meta is a success.
Microsoft and Apple employees moving to Meta
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report stated that around 100 employees had left Microsoft for Meta. The employees were part of an augmented reality (AR) team at Microsoft that worked on the HoloLens augmented reality (AR) headsets.
The employee exodus from Microsoft to Meta is also seen on LinkedIn, a professional social media platform. WSJ notes that an assessment of various LinkedIn profiles shows that over 70 employees that worked on Microsoft’s HoloLens AR headsets have left the company over the past year. Out of this number, more than 40 have joined Meta.
Meta could be poaching these employees because of the high level of experience regarding AR headsets. Microsoft was among the first tech giants to venture into AR spaces with the launch of the HoloLens project in 2016. These headsets have become some of the most advanced in the AR sector.
Microsoft is also venturing into the metaverse, with the company releasing an announcement in early November last year, offering several Team updates and upgrades for the Xbox gaming console. The company also announced the launch of a new product known as the “Dynamics 365 Connected Spaces.”
At the time, the CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella, said, “What’s most important is that we are able to bring our humanity with us and choose how we want to experience this world.”
Apple is fighting to retain its employees through incentives
On the other hand, Apple is also witnessing an employee exodus to Meta. However, the company seeks to counteract this by offering employees lucrative stock options and bonuses. A report from Bloomberg states that these incentives are valued at between $50,000 and $180,000.
In December 2021, the company offered bonuses to various engineers working on silicon design and hardware. The bonuses were also given to some workers in software operations.
Apple has yet to issue a definite stance on whether it will join the metaverse. The firm had earlier noted that its VR headset was not a part of its plans to join the metaverse.
Your capital is at risk.
