NBA legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson has filed new trademark applications for his name “Magic Johnson” and “Building Magic Together.” The former NBA superstar plans to launch assorted virtual assets with these brands.
Magic Johnson Enters The Metaverse
In a March 21 blog post, Mike Kondoudis, an intellectual property (IP) accredited attorney, confirmed that Magic Johnson filed trademark applications with United States Patents and Trademark Office related to non-fungible tokens and metaverse on March 16, 2023.

Born in 1959, Magic Johnson is an American former professional basketball player. Johnson is regarded as the greatest point guard of all time. The basketball legend played 13 seasons in the National Basketball Association.
According to data submitted, the 64-year-old superstar anticipates using his brand name to launch downloadable virtual goods such as sports trading cards, memorabilia, clothing, footwear, headwear, and sports jersey.
Johnson intends to launch software applications featuring downloadable photographs, drawings, videos, and animation related to non-fungible tokens. He also plans to launch virtual real estate, virtual restaurants, and virtual motor vehicles in the metaverse.
Moreover, Johnson intends to launch an online marketplace allowing crypto users and sports fans to buy and sell digital and virtual goods. The digital market platform will use no-fungible tokens to authenticate transactions.
Other Sports Superstars In Metaverse & NFT Space
NBA legend Magic Johnson joins a rapidly growing list of notable sports stars that have already showcased an interest in investing in the nascent metaverse and NFT sector. In May 2022, Kevin Durant, the professional basketball player for the Brooklyn Nets, filed trademark applications with the United States Patent and Trademark Office to launch NFTs.
Earlier this year, former American National Football League (NFL) star Marshawn Lynch filed a trademark application to protect his brand, Beast Mode. Lynch showcased plans to launch NFTs using his brand name.
Other sports celebrities, which have already invested in the metaverse and NFT sector, include Mr. Scottie Pippen, who turned his Image into an NFT; Cristiano Ronaldo, who teamed with Binance to launch NFTs; Sergio Aguero, Mike Tyson, and Lionel Messi.
