The global adoption of non-fungible token collections has begun increasing this new year after constantly flattening since June 2022. Jeju Island, the popular South Korean tourist destination, is a testament to increased NFT adoption. This popular tourist destination has announced plans to launch non-fungible token-based tourism cards to attract more tourists, including youth, to the region.
Jeju Island Taps NFTs To Attract More Visitors
In a January 06 press release, Maeil Kyungjae, the popular South Korean local media, confirmed that Jeju Island, a subtropical region of South Korea with its unique legal framework, plans to launch a non-fungible token collection. Jeju Island is an autonomous province of South Korea located in the East China Sea. This island is famous for its volcanic geology and lava tubes. It’s also a tourism destination for its uniquely matriarchal family structures, including the famous Haenyeo, female free divers who go deep sea foraging for abalone, sea cucumber, and other local specialties. This popular retreat is also home to miles of golden beaches, winding coastal trails, and Jeju Waterworld.
South Korea’s Jeju Island plans to issue NFT tourist cards on an unnamed blockchain network to enhance travel experiences. The NFT cards aim to offer tourists discounts, travel subsidies, and other benefits. Moreover, tourists using the upcoming NFT-based tourism cards will be able to document their travel experiences, including visit locations, time, photos, and videos. Tao NFT holders can also enjoy perks such as discounts on attractions.
Jeju Island’s Crypto and NFT Journey
Jeju Islands integrated blockchain technology in 2019 and launched a local stablecoin duped Tamna Jeon to revitalize the tourism economy. At the time, the island authority launched the Blockchain Hub City Development Research Service to explore advanced blockchain applications. By 2021, it expanded its crypto initiatives across the public sector, such as traffic management systems and VAT refunds for foreign visitors.
By integrating NFTs within its system, Jeju Island aims to offer additional benefits to visitors. The marketing strategy targets more generations, including millennials and Zoomers, hoping to boost visits and increase repeat tourists. These NFT cards will launch in the second half of 2025. South Koreans began flocking back to crypto late last year as the markets rose on renewed regulatory optimism in the United States.
