Crandell Addington, an esteemed figure in the poker community and a successful entrepreneur, died on Sunday at the age of 85. His death marks the end of an era for many who admired his contributions both at the poker table and in the business world. Addington was not only a Poker Hall of Famer but also played a pivotal role in the establishment of the World Series of Poker (WSOP), a landmark event in the poker world.
Limit poker is a science, but no-limit is an art. In limit, you’re shooting at a target. In no-limit, the target comes alive and shoots back at you.
In the late 1960s, Addington, alongside a friend, organized what would become a historic gathering for poker enthusiasts. This event, originally known as the Texas Gamblers Convention in 1969, eventually evolved into the first WSOP in 1970. It attracted the best poker talent and high rollers from throughout the nation, setting the stage for what would become a global phenomenon.
When he was invited to address students at Harvard University in 2007 he said:
We did have weapons. It was not really to use on each other. What we really wanted to be able to do was, if we won, we wanted to be able to get back to the car with the money. And so, not only did we have to beat a lot of really good players, but we had to dodge the hijackers and often times the sheriff of the county.
During the 1970s, Addington’s prowess at the poker table was undeniable. He reached the final table of the WSOP seven times, a record that remains unchallenged to this day. His skills in No-Limit Hold’Em earned him the nickname “No-Limit Hold’Em Legend,” as described by his close friend and fellow poker icon, Doyle Brunson. Addington’s view on poker strategy was that “Limit poker is a science, but no-limit is an art. In limit, you’re shooting at a target. In no-limit, the target comes alive and shoots back at you,” reflecting his deep understanding of the game. His significant impact on the sport was honored with his induction into the Poker Hall of Fame in 2005.
Beyond the poker table, Addington was also a formidable businessman and entrepreneur. In the 1960s and 1970s, he and his peers often carried guns, not to settle scores among themselves, but as protection against robbers. At a Harvard University talk, he once explained the necessity of such measures by stating that they needed to ensure they could safely transport their winnings. He emphasized the challenges they faced, which included outplaying tough competitors and evading hijackers and sometimes even local law enforcement.
After stepping away from professional poker in the mid-1980s, Addington ventured into the business world. He established a thriving oil company in Texas and, in 2003, co-founded Phoenix Biotechnology. He held the positions of chairman and CEO at the company before stepping down due to health reasons.
Addington’s legacy extends beyond his business and poker achievements. He was actively involved in philanthropy, supporting various animal charities and providing educational funding for his family members. His multifaceted life and career left an indelible mark on both the poker community and the many lives he touched through his entrepreneurial and philanthropic efforts.
