Amazon has taken a significant step forward in its quest to enhance logistics and delivery speeds by implementing artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The e-commerce giant plans to leverage AI to minimize the distance between products and customers, resulting in faster and more efficient deliveries.
Stefano Perego, the Vice President of Customer Fulfillment and Global Operations Services for North America and Europe at Amazon, recently spoke to CNBC about the company’s adoption of AI. He explained AI is playing a vital role in multiple aspects of Amazon’s operations, particularly transportation, product search, and inventory management.

In terms of transportation, AI is being used for mapping and route planning, considering various factors, such as weather. By utilizing AI algorithms, Amazon can optimize its delivery routes, leading to faster and more reliable deliveries to customers.
In addition, AI will impact product search. AI algorithms assist customers in finding their desired items on Amazon’s platform. These algorithms analyze customer preferences, search patterns, and historical data to provide personalized and relevant search results. This ensures that customers can quickly and easily find what they are looking for, enhancing their overall shopping experience.
However, one of the key areas where AI is making a significant impact for Amazon is inventory optimization. Perego stressed the importance of inventory placement in reducing service costs and improving delivery speed. Deciding where to place each unit of inventory is a complex task, but with the help of AI, Amazon can strategically position products closer to customers. This approach allows for same-day or next-day deliveries, a service that has become synonymous with Amazon’s Prime subscription offering.
“Imagine how complex the problem of deciding where to place that unit of inventory is. And to place it in a way that we reduce the distance to fulfill orders and increase the speed of delivery,” Perego said.
AI Will Help Amazon Achieve its “Regionalization” Initiative
To achieve its goal of regionalized warehousing and faster deliveries, Amazon relies on advanced AI technology to analyze vast amounts of data and identify patterns. By anticipating product demand and determining the optimal placement of inventory, Amazon can fulfill customer orders more efficiently.
AI will help Amazon fulfill its “regionalization” initiative, where the company will strategically place products closer to customers. As a result, Amazon will offer same-day or next-day deliveries, similar to its Prime subscription service. Currently, over 74% of customer orders in the United States are fulfilled from nearby distribution centers, showcasing the success of Amazon’s efforts.
In April, Amazon made headlines by announcing the release of Bedrock, an AI model designed to enable users of Amazon Web Services (AWS) to build generative AI models. This further shows Amazon’s commitment to advancing AI technology and its integration into various aspects of its operations.
By embracing AI, Amazon is revolutionizing its logistics and delivery systems. Implementing AI algorithms in transportation, product search, and inventory management allows the company to provide faster deliveries, and an improved shopping experience for its customers. As Amazon continues to prioritize the use of AI, we can expect further advancements in its logistics capabilities, cementing its position as a leader in the e-commerce industry.
