Ripple co-founder Chris Larsen lost $665 million in XRP in a crypto wallet hack because he stored private keys in a LastPass vault compromised in 2022.
That’s according to blockchain sleuth ZachXBT, who cited a forfeiture complaint filed by US law enforcement on March 6. Larsen lost 283 million XRP tokens in a January 2024 hack.

Federal investigators, including the FBI and Secret Service, confirm that the stolen data enabled hackers to crack Larsen’s master password, unlocking his crypto wallets.
Stolen XRP Worth $150 Million At The Time
The stolen XRP, worth $150 million at the time of the hack, has since ballooned in value to over $665 million as the crypto appreciated. Authorities have recovered $23 million so far, but the hunt for the remaining funds continues.
Larsen confirmed the hack targeted his personal accounts, not Ripple’s corporate wallets, though he has not commented on the recent reports that he stored his private keys in the LastPass password manager.
