Crypto market leaders Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) plunged over the last 24 hours ahead of an FOMC (Federal Open Market Committee) meeting and after a new assassination attempt on former US president Donald Trump.

Bitcoin tumbled more than 2% in the past 24 hours to trade at $58,857.47 as of 3:40 a.m. EST, according to CoinMarketCap. During the same period, ETH shed more than 5% of its value to trade at $2,297.78.

Fed Set To Cut Rates At FOMC Meeting For First Time Since Early 2020

The next FOMC meeting will be held between Sept. 17 and Sept. 18, with economists expecting an interest rate cut of anywhere from 25 to 50 basis points. The decision will be released on Sept. 18 at 18:00 GMT. It would be the first rate cut from the Fed since early 2020.

Other central bank rate decisions will be announced this week. Brazil’s central bank is scheduled to hold its next meeting across Sept. 17 and Sept. 18, while the Bank of England, South Africa’s Reserve Bank and Norway’s Norges Bank will release their interest rate decisions on Sept. 19.

Trump “Safe” After Nearby Gunshots

Former US president Trump is safe after gunshots “in his vicinity” were reported. “President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time,” a spokesperson for his campaign said in a Sept. 15 statement.

The Republican candidate for this year’s US election was reportedly playing golf at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida when gunshots were heard nearby. The golf course was immediately locked down as a result.

The former president’s son, Donald Trump Jr., said in a Sept. 15 post on X that an AK-47 “was discovered in the bushes.” A suspect has also reportedly been apprehended, Trump Jr. added in his post.
