Pro-crypto lawyer John Deaton has confirmed his plan to challenge Senator Elizabeth Warren for the Massachusetts Senate Seat.

Deaton plans to run against Democrat Warren as a Republican, but first must win its nomination in a contest against at least four other candidates in GOP primaries on Sept. 3.

“First, it was schoolyard bullies, then it was greedy corporations and the SEC, and now I am taking on the Washington elites,” said Deaton in a tweet on X and a video. ”I am running for U.S. Senate to continue my life’s mission to shake things up for the people who need it most.”

Deaton is best known in the crypto industry for the CryptoLaw website that he founded, and for a 2021 petition that challenged a Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) lawsuit that claimed Ripple’s XRP token is a security. Just last week, CryptoLaw tweeted that SEC chair Gary Gensler had been proven wrong on the law ”over and over.”

“Now he’s basically waging some kind of propaganda war against an industry because he can’t win in court to get crypto under his regulatory thumb,” it said. “How is this guy in charge of protecting our markets?”

Warren Says John Deaton Backed by ”Special Interest Groups”

Warren is sometimes seen as a critic of the crypto industry and is currently championing an anti-money laundering bill that mandates crypto users, miners, validators, and wallet providers to enforce Know-Your-Customer rules.

In a post on X, Warren hit back at Deaton, saying he is an outsider from Rhode Island backed by special interest groups.

In response, Deaton said his campaign sought to tackle the issues facing the people of Massachusetts and that he had no backing from special interest groups.

“No one recruited me,” he said. “I’m looking forward to a substantive discussion on the issues that are important to the good people of Massachusetts, like income inequality, inflation, housing costs, illegal immigration, the debt crisis, and veterans’ services.”
