Macau collected MOP$7.83 billion (US$969 million) in gaming taxes in August, down 8.0% from the same month last year, according to government figures.

The August tax take was 9.5% higher than July’s. Gaming duty is levied on casino gross gaming revenue, and the August collection reflects July’s takings, when gross gaming revenue came in at MOP$20.3 billion (US$2.51 billion), a fall of 8.4% year-on-year, a figure first reported in the trade press.

The monthly dip does not extend to the fiscal year. For the first eight months of 2026, gaming tax revenue reached MOP$66.2 billion (US$8.19 billion), up 6.9% on the same period in 2025. That is 71.5% of the MOP$92.5 billion (US$11.5 billion) the government budgeted for gaming duty in FY26, putting the territory ahead of its annual forecast with four months to go.

Gaming tax remains the foundation of Macau’s public finances. Total government revenue for the first eight months stood at MOP$76.6 billion (US$9.48 billion), and casino duty accounted for 86.4% of it, leaving the budget highly exposed to any sustained fall in casino revenue. The August figure, tied as it is to a single weak month of GGR, sits within a year that is otherwise running ahead of plan.
