Hackers and scammers appear relentless in attacking the nascent non-fungible token sector. In yet another strike, hackers have just compromised the Gutter Cat Gang NFT collection’s official Twitter account and that of its founder to promote fraudulent phishing links.

Gutter Cut Gang’s Twitter Account Hacked

In a July 8 blog post, ZachXBT, an on-chain crypto sleuth and crypto detective, confirmed that hackers have compromised “The Gutter Cat Gang” NFT collection and its founder Gutter Ric’s Twitter accounts. Hackers are using the accounts to post fraudulent drainers links.

Launched in May 2021, the Gutter Cat Gang is an NFT startup behind the popular Gutter Cut NFT collection, which features a fixed edition of 3,000 randomly generated NFTs hosted on the Ethereum network. The NFT collection was set in a post-apocalyptic world in the year 2050 and sold out in just 10 minutes in 2021.

Since its establishment, the Gutter Cut Gang NFT ecosystem has grown to higher heights, making the NFT startup vulnerable to scams and hacks. The NFT project has more than 18,000 followers on Instagram and over 10,000 followers on Twitter.

In the recent hack incident, hackers breached the security barrier to the Gutter Cat Gang’s social media discord and gained control of its Twitter Account. In a short time, hackers have used the Twitter account to promote a fake NFT drop.

Since the NFT startup has strong community backing, several investors have fallen into the easy phishing trap. An identified investor has lost over $700,000 worth of NFTs, while another has lost all high wallet holdings. Some NFTs stolen include the Bored Ape Yacht Club, Doodles, Mutant Ape Yacht Club, and Bored Ape Kennel Club NFTs.

Hackers Shift Target To Founders And NFTs Protocols

It’s worth noting that this is the second time in two days that the Gutter Cut Gang Twitter account and that of its founder have been compromised. Therefore, staying safe is advisable since no information about whether the NFT protocol has regained control of social media accounts has been shared.

In recent weeks, hackers have adopted the tendency of striking protocol and senior officials’ social media handles to promote their malicious phishing links. Earlier in May, hackers also compromised Bored Ape’s new boss “Daniel Alegre” Twitter account and used it to promote fraudulent phishing links.

Earlier this year, Moonbirds’ co-founder and prominent web3 investor Kevin Rose fell fowl of a wallet hack. Rose confirmed losing more than $800,000 worth of NFTs. Moonbirds is an NFT collection featuring a limited set of 10,000 owl PFP images.
