China has laid out a list of demands before agreeing to trade talks with the Trump administration, just hours before US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell is due to deliver a closely watched speech.
Key among the demands was that the US show China more respect and rein in disparaging remarks by administration members, according to a Bloomberg report that cited sources familiar with the Chinese government’s thinking.
The report added that China also wants the US to be more consistent about its demands and to be willing to address its concerns over US sanctions and Taiwan.
Beijing also wants the US to appoint a dedicated person for talks who has the president’s support and can help prepare a deal that Trump and China President Xi Jinping can sign when they meet.
As China sets its conditions for trade talks with the US, traders and analysts are preparing for US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell to deliver a speech on the state of the economy later today.
In his second public appearance since Trump unleashed his sweeping tariffs, Powell may shed light on issues including the impact tariffs may have on jobs, inflation, and the overall outlook for the economy.
