Solana is venturing deeper into the Web3 space by launching a Web3 developer kit, and a smartphone dubbed the Saga phone. The CEO of Solana Labs, Anatoly Yakovenko, announced the launch of this phone during the launch of the “Solana Mobile Stack” (SMS).
Solana to launch a Web3 phone
Yakovenko noted that the new smartphone called “Saga” would be available in early 2023. The smartphone will cost around $1000, and its specs will make it a formidable competitor among the other smartphone brands in the market.
Solana’s Saga mobile phone will feature a Snapdragon8+ Gen 1 processor, a 6.67” OLED display, 12GB of RAM, and a storage of 512GB. The main distinguishing feature of this phone is that it will have a decentralized app store and a mobile wallet dubbed “Solana Pay.”
Your capital is at risk.
The Web3 features on this phone will support transactions using QR codes. There will also be a “seed vault” that will allow a user’s private keys to be stored securely. The network has already launched a presale for these mobile phones. Those who wish to participate can make a $100 deposit.
One of the co-founders of Solana, Raj Gokal, noted that “Solana can revolutionize so much of what we do every day, but we need to open the possibilities for decentralized apps on our mobile devices in order for this potential to be realized.”
The CEO of the FTX cryptocurrency exchange, Sam Bankman-Fried, and one of the greatest advocates of the Solana network said that the phone sector within the crypto space was yet to take off despite most people looking for mobile convenience. The FTX CEO noted that it was time to have an “actual wallet built into your phone,” and this is what Solana was working on.
Not the first of its kind
This is not the first time a Web3 mobile phone has been developed. However, Solana could succeed where others failed, given the vast team of developers working on the project. HTC and Samsung had similar initiatives for crypto-centric smartphones.
Moreover, the traditional phone manufacturing companies have been reluctant to fully dive into the Web3 space. Yakovenko noted that since the lives of people mainly revolved around mobile devices, a phone that had these attributes would be used to open doors to a world of innovations and technology. The transition towards Web3 technology will aid in adopting the Solana Saga phone.
