Police Officer Claims Force Needs to Learn How Bitcoin Works

Cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology are used for crime around the world. A large reason for this is because not many out there know how it all works. Sure, people have heard of Bitcoin, but many don’t really understand it.

It’s because of this that law enforcement officer Sergeant Phil Ariss claims the police force should become aware of how to use the asset. He’s been a part of the police since 2008 and joined the East Midlands Special Operations Unit (EMSOU) four years ago.

Then, in February of this year, a man was arrested for drug trading online utilizing cryptocurrency. Ariss believes this shouldn’t happen again, and now tries to educate different people on the force regarding this technology.

“What we do within the team makes a difference to modern policing – the way we police is not just confined to the streets; it’s now in every home through the guise of technology.  For all its benefits there is also a risk that it can be misused in the wrong hands,” says Ariss.

Ariss claims that as “more and more” criminals turn to Bitcoin and other assets, it’s important they train officers to keep an eye on the different ways these cryptocurrencies are used.
