As soon as sensitive details are put on the login page, the virus immediately sends them to the attackers, who use them to gain entry into the victim\u2019s accounts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Essentially, this means that attackers can use StrandHogg to steal anything, varying from Email addresses to cryptocurrency wallet passwords and banking apps. However, as Promon notes, the virus can also hack into a mobile phone\u2019s microphone, read, and even send text messages. It can also read files on the mobile phone along with details on pictures and other media components.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The company added that while they had informed Google about the vulnerability as far back as the summer of 2018, the internet company only took out the affected apps. The malicious app itself exists on all Android versions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/StrandHogg?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#StrandHogg<\/a> was misused by the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/BankBot?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#BankBot<\/a> Android banking Trojan found by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LukasStefanko?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@LukasStefanko<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/GooglePlay?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#GooglePlay<\/a> back in 2017.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>Using &quot;taskAffinity&quot;, it posed as a Google Play Store app to request credit card details from victims. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ESETresearch?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ESETresearch<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/pkqsIXT5it\">https:\/\/t.co\/pkqsIXT5it<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/sboayBW3gG\">pic.twitter.com\/sboayBW3gG<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; ESET Research (@ESETresearch) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ESETresearch\/status\/1202154415584694272?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 4, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Promon initially found 36 apps on the Google Play Store, which, when installed, loads the additional apps onto the affected devices. These secondary apps are the ones that activate StrandHogg malware.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe specific malware sample which Promon analyzed did not reside on Google Play but was installed through several dropper apps\/hostile downloaders distributed on Google Play. These apps have now been removed, but in spite of Google\u2019s Play Protect security suite, dropper apps continue to be published and frequently slip under the radar, with some being downloaded millions of times before being spotted and deleted,\u201d Promon asserted in its release.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Disguise is the new norm\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">To be safe, the company adds that smartphone users should be wary of certain red flags when operating their phones. These include apps constantly requesting for logins, person pop-ups that have app names, typos in user interfaces, malfunctioning \u201cback\u201d buttons, and permission requests from apps which would have no use for them (such as calculators)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">These days, malicious codes asking as legitimate apps or websites are becoming commonplace. The mode of operation has formed the backbone of some of the cryptocurrency industry\u2019s top scam methods, including but not limited to ransomware and cryptojacking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In August, cybersecurity firm Varonis released a\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.varonis.com\/blog\/monero-cryptominer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">research report<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0on Norman, a new form of malware that, among other things, can evade a computer\u2019s task manager software.
