NEW YORK (InsideBitcoins) — For bitcoin, the first-movers among consumers in America may be Hispanics. According to a poll conducted by Morning Consult, while more than half (53%) of likely voters in America know little or nothing at all about the cryptocurrency, 18% of Hispanics said they know “a lot” about bitcoin. Only 10% of whites claimed such knowledge.
This is the second month in a row that the poll has seen such a trend. And not only are Latinos aware of the digital currency, 42% say they are likely to use bitcoin to purchase goods and services. Less than one-quarter of white Americans were so inclined.
Both polls were conducted among a nationally representative sample of more than 1,700 likely voters.
Ana Gonzalez-Barrera of the Pew Research Center told Morning Consult that the reason for the disparity could be because Hispanic respondents are typically younger than others.
“We have results from Pew Hispanic and Pew Internet that shows Hispanics tend to have higher shares of technology usage, particularly with mobile technology…part of that is actually that Hispanics are younger than other groups, and they are more likely to use technology because they are younger,” Gonzalez said.
The research sample did indeed reflect a younger Hispanic response rate: 39% of respondents were Latinos between the ages of 18 and 29, while 13% were whites of the same age.
