OpenAI, the company responsible for the popular AI chatbot ChatGPT, is reportedly feeling the heat from competing open-source AI models and is preparing to enter the space with one of its own.

OpenAI Developing Open-Source AI Model in Response to Rival Leaks

On May 16, a person with knowledge of the plan revealed in a report that OpenAI is actively working on an open-source AI model for public release. This move comes in response to the increasing pressure from rival open-sourced AI models, including those leaked from Meta in February. The report did not specify the exact timeline for releasing OpenAI’s model.

According to the report, OpenAI’s open-source model is not expected to compete directly with its flagship product, ChatGPT. However, OpenAI primarily focuses on selling access to its more advanced and sophisticated models, which offer excellent value to its customers. However, the company has faced intense competition from various open-source AI models.

One notable competitor is Meta’s LLaMa, initially limited to researchers. However, in late February, an individual leaked the entire LLaMa model on the imageboard site 4chan, making it widely accessible. This unexpected leak posed a challenge to OpenAI.

Furthermore, other open-source models have also entered the market, such as Stability AI and Databricks’ Dolly 2.0 AI. Stability AI made its large language models available in April, while Databricks open-sourced Dolly 2.0 AI shortly before that.

OpenAI Rivalry Intensifies as Open-Source AI Models Gain Momentum

In a significant development, AI firm Together recently secured $20 million in a seed round of funding, attracting support from prominent crypto figures such as Dawn Song, co-founder of Oasis Labs, Alex Atallah, co-founder of OpenSea, and Mary-Catherine Lader, chief operating officer of Uniswap.

Together’s primary aim is to provide open-source generative AI models, further bolstering the growing trend of open-source models in the AI industry. The emergence of open-source AI models has not gone unnoticed by industry giants like Google. A leaked document from Luke Sernau, a senior software engineer at Google, highlighted the substantial threat posed by open-source models to the company’s AI endeavors.

Sernau acknowledged that Google and OpenAI must be adequately positioned to prevail in the ongoing arms race. He pointed out that while Google competed with OpenAI, open-source AI models silently advanced, surpassing existing capabilities. Sernau emphasized that these open-source models outperform their proprietary counterparts regarding speed, customization options, privacy, and effectiveness.

Recently, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, was actively seeking $100 million in funding for a Worldcoin project. Worldcoin aims to create a cryptocurrency that is globally distributed and collectively owned. Both existing and new investors are expected to contribute to the $100 million goal. Notably, Worldcoin has garnered significant interest from various investors, including a16z (Andreessen Horowitz’s), Digital Currency Group, Coinbase Ventures, Reid Hoffman (co-founder of LinkedIn), and Sam Bankman-Fried (former FTX CEO).
